Finding Stillness: Winter Temple Retreats in Haenam, South Korea

Hello, this is JIRO.

Yesterday, we shared a post about tourist attractions in Haenam.

Today, we’d like to take you somewhere quieter—

to temples in Haenam that feel especially meaningful during the snowy winter months.

Duryunsan Mountain & Daehungsa Temple Area

Address: San 8-1, Gurim-ri, Samsan-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

Daehungsa Temple is embraced by eight mountain peaks, including Dosolbong and Hyeolmangbong, forming a landscape that feels both grand and protective.

When snow settles over the forest, the mountains become a natural barrier, gently separating the temple from the outside world.
In winter, you can sense a profound stillness here—as if you’ve stepped a little away from everyday life.
Mihwangsa Temple

Address: 1 Seojeong-ri, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

Standing at Mihwangsa on a snowy day, your gaze naturally drifts toward the West Sea.
With rocky cliffs behind you and the quiet ocean before you, the winter scenery slowly fills your senses.

Before long, thoughts soften, and you find yourself quietly immersed in contemplation.
Eunjuksa Temple

Address: 404 Eunjuksa-gil, Masan-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

Eunjuksa sits halfway up the northern slopes of Geumgangsan Mountain.
Its long, secluded valley and tranquil surroundings create a deeply calming atmosphere.

In winter, standing before the snow-covered stone pagoda, your breathing naturally evens out, and the mind settles into a gentle calm.
Iljiam Hermitage

Address: 400 Daehungsa-gil, Samsan-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

Iljiam is regarded as a sacred site of Korean tea culture.
It was here that Choui, a Zen monk of the late Joseon period, sought to revive Korea’s fading tea tradition, exchanging ideas with renowned scholars such as Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and Chusa Kim Jeong-hui.

On a cold winter day, savoring a warm cup of tea here slowly loosens the tension in your heart, leaving behind a quiet sense of peace.

Taeyoungsa Temple

Address: 191 Cheontaesan-gil, Bukpyeong-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do

Located just below the summit of Cheontaesan Mountain, Taeyoungsa Temple offers sweeping views of Wando Island.

When snow covers the 108 stone steps, climbing them one by one becomes a meditative experience—
a gentle rhythm that helps untangle your thoughts along the way.

Winter, with its crisp air and hushed landscapes, is perhaps the best time to seek stillness.

Why not take a journey to Haenam’s temples, in search of quiet moments and time for reflection?
